Blackboard Transact needed to modernize its campus services with an enhanced self-service kiosk for food courts and a new suite of bookstore management apps.

We delivered three new apps for its bookstore offering and upgraded the interface of its self-service kiosk POS solution to offer a superior user experience.

Blackboard gained an edge over its competitors by enabling the seamless and remote deployment of its POS solutions without the need for any prior infrastructure.

Objectives

US-based Blackboard’s Transact division provides retail solutions for campus services. It reached out to ELEKS to help with a project focused on optimizing its retail products, upgrading the interface and user-friendliness, and developing an API for its self-service kiosk solution — a food court-style ordering system for campuses. It was also looking to develop its campus retail offering by adding a suite of bookstore management mobile apps.

It partnered with ELEKS because of our proven product design expertise and the option to select different cooperation models based on preference and needs.

Solution

Our team designed and delivered three bookstore management apps whilst upgrading Blackboard’s self-service kiosk user experience.

POS modernization

With ease and convenience in mind, we designed a new user experience for the POS terminals Blackboard supplies to campus food courts. The result was a multi-platform solution that optimizes the food ordering process and allows customers to make instant order customizations while supporting simple and secure payments. The ELEKS team also developed an API that helps boost the POS’s responsiveness and performance by making back-to-front-end communication smoother.

Bookstore management

By harnessing automation, Blackboard wanted to eliminate manual transaction processing and mitigate human error. We developed an end-to-end system for smart bookstore management that includes three iOS applications focused on inventory management and automation, book sales, and book rental returns processes. The aim of this new smart system was to give salespeople more mobility and offer those running the stores a full suite of reporting tools, KPI trackers, and employee performance aids.

With these new bookstore management apps, Blackboard has far greater flexibility and has gained an edge over its competitors. Meanwhile, its enhanced smart self-service kiosk enables it to expand its offering to include new products, thereby securing an even bigger competitive advantage.
